Pattern 1857 East India Company Sappers and Miners .577 inch rifled carbine, 1857
Derived from the Pattern 1853 Rifle-musket, this carbine was ordered from the Tower and the Birmingham Gun Trade in July 1857. Although 4000 of these weapons were produced, as a result of the Indian Mutiny (1857-1859) none were issued to native sappers. A smooth-bore version with the barrel bored out to .656 inch calibre was substituted as the Pattern 1858.
