Queen Victoria and Prince Albert took a keen personal interest in the welfare of their soldiers, especially the Guards, and at the conclusion of the Crimean War (1854-1856) she invited many veterans to Buckingham Palace and Windsor Cast. She also instituted the Victoria Cross, the highest award for gallantry.
