After a number of months in Devon the Sharpshooters moved by road and rail to Whitwell in Derbyshire. The unit's war diary mentions one of the Morris trucks of the road party falling foul of the icy roads. By 31 December 1939, 27 officers and 412 other ranks were billeted at Whitwell.
