Crusader tank and crew, 3rd County of London Yeomanry, Egypt, 1943
Photograph compiled by Major Wilfred Herbert James Sale, MC, 3rd/4th County of London Yeomanry (Sharpshooters), World War Two, North Africa, 1943.
Members of 3rd County of London Yeomanry (Sharpshooters) pose with a Crusader tank on a range in Egypt. The tank crewmen are named as 'Les Lewis', 'Jimmy Pool', 'Jack Archer', and 'Pedro' (Peter Smethurst).
In early 1943 the Sharpshooters were out of the line re-fitting and training. The unit was re-equipped and reinforced after suffering heavy losses in the previous year's battles in North Africa. The regiment was based at Cowley Camp at Mena, near Cairo, where it undertook training until July 1943 prior to Operation HUSKY, the amphibious operation to invade the island of Sicily.
