Loading Shermans on a Landing Craft Tank (LCT), 1943
Photograph compiled by Major Wilfred Herbert James Sale, MC, 3rd/4th County of London Yeomanry (Sharpshooters), World War Two, North Africa, 1943.
In early 1943 the Sharpshooters were out of the line re-fitting and training. The unit was re-equipped with Crusader and Sherman tanks after suffering heavy losses in the previous year's Gazala battles. The regiment stayed in and around Cairo training until July 1943 when they embarked for the landing on Sicily.
The Landing Craft Tank (LCT) was an amphibious assault ship for landing armoured vehicles on beachheads. Hundreds of LCTs were used during Operation HUSKY - the invasion of Sicily in July 1943.
