'The only way back as the Hun had each end of the loop in the River', River Simeto, Sicily, 1943

Following the battle for the Primosole Bridge the war diary of the 3rd County of London Yeomanry (Sharpshooters) tracks the movement of the unit along the River Simeto. The entries for the end of July mention the threat of German counterattacks in the area. Sale's records that this cantilever bridge was reserved for wheeled vehicles while tanks like the Sherman pictured had to use the river bed and a bulldozer track.
