Sherman tank and crew, 3rd/4th County of London Yeomanry (Sharpshooters), Italy, 1943

A bivouac pitched around a Sherman tank in an Italian orchard. The tank crew, commanded by Freddie James, pose with a captured Nazi swastika flag, a souvenir of the Italian campaign.

The Sherman tank had a crew of five consisting of a commander, the driver, a gunner, a radio operator who also acted as gun loader, and a co-driver who also manned the hull machine gun.
