Hugh Matthews was made a troop captain in April 1941. Captain Matthews fought in North Africa and was wounded on 27 May 1942, near Bir el Harmat, during the Battle of Bir Hacheim. He was promoted to major in March 1943, commanding 'C' Squadron, 3rd County of London Yeomanry (Sharpshooters). He was wounded by shrapnel at Primosole Bridge in Sicily on 17 July 1943. By November 1943 he was back in action, commanding a composite squadron during the campaign on mainland Italy.
Captain Teddy Bradbury was known by the nicknames 'Flash Alf' or 'Wopey'.
On 13 January 1944 most of the 3rd County of London Yeomanry (Sharpshooters) personnel, leaving their vehicles, moved from Lucera to Taranto by train. The bulk of 3rd County of London Yeomanry (Sharpshooters), along with Headquarters, 4th Armoured Brigade, and the Royal Scots Greys sailed from Naples for the United Kingdom on the Merchant Vessel Tegelberg, on 28 January 1944. Other elements of the Sharpshooters travelled on the HMT Orion in the same convoy, numbered MKF28.
