'Charlie Ratcliffe', Netherlaw House, Kirkcudbright Training Area, Scotland, 1944

Photograph by Major Wilfred Herbert James Sale, MC, 3rd/4th County of London Yeomanry (Sharpshooters), 1944.

In February 1944, on return to the United Kingdom from fighting in Italy, the men of the 3rd County of London Yeomanry (Sharpshooters) were granted leave. The unit was soon back training and in March 1944 it was undertaking gunnery training at the Kirkcudbright ranges in Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland. The unit's war diary mentions 'a small admin party' arriving at Kirkcudbright on 17 March 1944.

The Kirkcudbright Training Area was acquired by the War Office in 1942 and was used for tank gunnery training, both mobile and fixed point firing. Netherlaw House was used as a headquarters building with some accommodation included.

From an album of 233 photographs compiled by Major W H J Sale, MC, 3rd/4th County of London Yeomanry (Sharpshooters), 1943-1944.
