In February 1944, on return to the United Kingdom from fighting in Italy, the men of the 3rd County of London Yeomanry (Sharpshooters) were granted leave. The unit was soon back training and in March 1944 it was located at the Kirkcudbright ranges in Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland.
Dundrennan Abbey is a twelfth century Cistercian Abbey near the Kirkcudbright Training Area. It fell into ruin during the Reformation in the sixteenth century.
