Preparation for invasion, Sherman Firefly tank, Worthing, 1944

A Sherman Firefly tank, armed with a 17-pounder gun, in a residential street in Worthing. It belonged to 3rd County of London Yeomanry who were then billeted in the town while awaiting embarkation for the D-Day landings. At this stage of the war the Firefly was the only British tank capable of defeating the German Panther and Tiger tanks at standard combat ranges.
