The civilian with the blanket over his shoulder was a Canadian Pilot Officer who had landed in France five months before the liberation of the town and had since been serving with the Maquis. The other civilian behind Captain Sale was a German deserter who had been driving German lorries for the Maquis and had been engaged in sabotage work for six months. He was arrested by the British but later released.
