Lieutenant-Colonel W 'Bill' Rankin, smokes a cigarette during a quiet moment in the Normandy Campaign. Rankin organised the amalgamation of the 3rd and 4th County of London Regiments into a single Regiment, following heavy losses during June and July 1944. He commanded the Regiment until he received a severe leg wound just after crossing the frontier into Germany in early 1945.
