The two soldiers in the centre of the photograph are named as 'Johnnie Davies' and 'Bert Howe'.
Although ultimately a costly failure, the ambitious airborne Operation MARKET GARDEN in September 1944 left the Allied ground forces holding a salient in Belgium and Holland. The liberated ground included Eindhoven and Nijmegen. Wintelre is a village just east of Eindhoven where 3rd/4th County of London Yeomanry (Sharpshooters) were billeted.
