The town of Hamminkeln was one of the targets of 6th Airborne Division during Operation VARSITY, 24 March 1945. The attack by 6th Airlanding Brigade was a success but a number of gliders crashed in the assault. The burnt-out wreck of a jeep that the glider was carrying can be seen in this picture.
