Photograph by Major Wilfred Herbert James Sale, MC, 3rd/4th County of London Yeomanry (Sharpshooters), World War Two, North Africa, 1942.

Desert landscape with palm trees and vehicles.

According to the 3rd County of London Yeomanry (Sharpshooters) war diary, elements of the unit arrived at Sidi Haneish on 29 January 1942. The unit rested for a few days and then moved on to Sidi BIshr.

Later in the campaign, Sidi Haneish was under German control. The Special Air Service mounted a raid on the Haggag el Qasaba airstrip on 26 July 1942, destroying several Luftwaffe aircraft on the ground. The allies recaptured Sidi Haneish and the US Army Air Force operated P40 Warhawk fighters from the airfield from November 1942.

From an album containing 182 photographs compiled by Major W H J Sale, MC, 3rd/4th County of London Yeomanry (Sharpshooters).
