'Types of desert. Soft sand', North Africa, 1942 (c)

Photograph by Major Wilfred Herbert James Sale, MC, 3rd/4th County of London Yeomanry (Sharpshooters), World War Two, North Africa, 1942.

One of a series of photographs in Sale's collection that show the various terrain that British and Commonwealth forces and their opponents had to contend with in North Africa. This photograph shows soft sand which could severely hamper the movement of vehicles, particularly those carry heavy supplies or fuel. Vehicles would often carry canvas mats or 'sand channels', perforated lengths of steel, to help them negotiate areas soft sand or mud.

From an album containing 199 photographs compiled by Major Wilfred Herbert James Sale, MC, 3rd/4th County of London Yeomanry (Sharpshooters).
