Hiddleston was killed in Libya in June 1942, during fighting on the Gazala Line. Hiddleston, Jimmy Sale and Peter Gregory were commanding three tanks knocked out while escorting an ammunition convoy in the chaotic battle in 'The Cauldron'. The Commonwealth War Graves Commission records Lieutenant James Maxwell Hiddleston as dying between 6 and 7 June 1942. His name is commemorated at the Knightsbridge War Cemetery, Acroma, Libya.
According to the unit's war diary, 3rd County of London Yeomanry (Sharpshooters) arrived in Sidi Bishr, near Alexandria, by road and rail in early February 1942. The unit trained at Sidi Bishr Camp, attending lectures on gunnery and mechanics and undertaking exchange visits with the Royal Navy. The unit moved its tanks on to Beni Yusef at the end of March 1942.
