A soldier named as 'Brian Darch' of the 3rd County of London Yeomanry (Sharpshooters) uses a petrol or paraffin stove in the Egyptian desert. A Crusader II tank is visible in the background.
Sergeant Norman Brian Darch would later be killed in action, fighting in Sicily, on 13 July 1943. He is commemorated at the Syracuse War Cemetery.
The Sharpshooters arrived in Egypt in late 1941 and took part in the successful campaign to oust German and Italian forces from North Africa. The unit moved on to Sicily and mainland Italy, returning to the United Kingdom in time to participate in the Normandy Landings in June 1944.
