Second Lieutenant Jimmy Sale, Egypt, 1942 (c)
Photograph by Second Lieutenant (later Major) W H J Sale, 3rd County of London Yeomanry (Sharpshooters), World War Two (1940-1943), North Africa, 1942 (c).
Sale was a junior officer in the 3rd County of London Yeomanry (Sharpshooters) and went on to win a Military Cross during the campaign in the Western Desert. A keen amateur photographer, he took a series of images that give us a fine insight into the North African campaign from the perspective of a British tank commander.
The Sharpshooters arrived in Egypt in late 1941 and took part in the successful campaign to oust German and Italian forces from North Africa. The unit moved on to Sicily and mainland Italy, returning to the United Kingdom in time to participate in the Normandy Landings in June 1944.
From an album containing 182 group photographs compiled by MajorW H J Sale, MC, 3rd/4th County of London Yeomanry (Sharpshooters).
