Second Lieutenant Jimmy Sale, Egypt, 1942

Photograph compiled by Second Lieutenant (later Major) W H J Sale, 3rd County of London Yeomanry (Sharpshooters), World War Two (1940-1943), North Africa, 1942.

Sale was a junior officer in the 3rd County of London Yeomanry (Sharpshooters) and went on to win a Military Cross during the campaign in the Western Desert. He was promoted from the ranks to 2nd lieutenant in early 1942 after the Sharpshooters received their baptism of fire in the desert in late 1941.

A keen amateur photographer, he took a series of images that give us a fine insight into the North African campaign from the perspective of a British tank commander.

From an album containing 182 group photographs compiled by Major W H J Sale, MC, 3rd/4th County of London Yeomanry (Sharpshooters).
