Eric Mills, 3rd County of London Yeomanry (Sharpshooters) cooking in the desert, North Africa, 1942

As armoured units were constantly on the move tank crews often had to make their own arrangements for cooking. Eric Mills of 3rd County of London Yeomanry (Sharpshooters) crouched next to what appears to be a makeshift cooker. In locations where wood was not available tank crews would burn petrol soaked sand in a tin to heat up their mess tins. These were given the nickname 'Benghazi burners'.
