25-pounders in action, North Africa, 1942
Photograph by Major Wilfred Herbert James Sale, MC, 3rd/4th County of London Yeomanry (Sharpshooters), World War Two, North Africa, 1942.
Quad tractors with limbers and field guns deployed in the desert.
The 25-pounder, the 'Gunners' Favourite', was first introduced in 1938 mounted on obsolete 18 Pounder carriages. The perfected gun was placed in service in February 1940 and was produced in large numbers throughout World War Two. The gun was very versatile, firing out to 12,250 metres at maximum range or it could be used as an anti-tank weapon using its unique traversing platform to move rapidly through 360 degrees of arc. It remained in service with the British Army until 1967.
From an album containing 189 photographs compiled by Major W H J Sale, MC, 3rd/4th County of London Yeomanry (Sharpshooters), 1943.
