'D. Day. Knightsbridge 1400hrs. Hun tanks. M.T. and guns ablaze', 1942
Photograph by Major Wilfred Herbert James Sale, MC, 3rd/4th County of London Yeomanry (Sharpshooters), World War Two, North Africa (1940-1943), 1942.
The action at Knightsbridge formed part of the Battle of Gazala (26 May-21 June 1942). Although attacks by elements of the 15th Panzer Division were fiercely resisted by 201st Guards Brigade, the wider battle went against the 8th Army. The Germans and Italians forced the Allies back and took the vital port of Tobruk soon afterwards.
From an album containing 189 photographs compiled by Major Wilfred Herbert James Sale, MC, 3rd/4th County of London Yeomanry (Sharpshooters), 1942. Photographs are portraits and scenes of interest associated with 7th Armoured Division in Africa.
