The strategically important port of Tobruk in Libya was captured from the Italians by British and Commonwealth forces in January 1941. Axis forces besieged the port but the siege was relieved during Operation CRUSADER in November 1941. The port fell into German and Italian hands again in June 1942 but was recaptured by the Allies in November 1942.
