'Grants and Cruisers, North Africa', 1942

Photograph by Major Wilfred Herbert James Sale, MC, 3rd/4th County of London Yeomanry (Sharpshooters), World War Two, North Africa, 1942.

3rd County of London Yeomanry was equipped with a variety of light and medium tanks, including Crusader Cruisers (A15), General Grants (M3) and Shermans (M4) during its service in North Africa.

'B' Squadron, 3rd County of London Yeomanry (Sharpshooters) and 'A' Squadron, 4th County of London Yeomanry (Sharpshooters) received their first General Grant tanks in March 1942. The Grant was armed with a 75mm gun which outclassed most German armour at the time. The remaining squadrons were equipped with Crusader tanks. The Grant tanks had two more crew than the Crusaders; they were heavier, slower and with the main gun mounted in the superstructure rather than in a turret, the crews had to adapt to their new vehicles.

From an album containing 189 photographs compiled by Major W H J Sale, MC, 3rd/4th County of London Yeomanry (Sharpshooters).
