'C.O.s parade. Saluting base. Lt Col Grafftey Smith takes the salute', 1942

Lieutenant Colonel Sir Anthony Paul Grafftey-Smith (1903-1960) took over command of 3rd County of London Yeomanry (Sharpshooters) in December 1941. Lieutenant Colonel Rupert Norton Harding-Newman (1907-2007) replaced Grafftey-Smith as commander in June 1942.

In September 1942 the Sharpshooters, having suffered heavy losses in the Western Desert, were pulled out of the front line. The regiment was moved to Mareopolis and then to Khatatba where the unit was re-equipped, trained and reinforced.
