'Inside Damascus Gate', Jerusalem, Palestine, 1943
Photograph compiled by Major Wilfred Herbert James Sale, MC, 3rd/4th County of London Yeomanry (Sharpshooters), World War Two, 1943.
Civilians passing through the Damascus Gate of the Old City of Jerusalem.
In early 1943 the Sharpshooters were out of the line re-fitting and training. The unit was re-equipped and reinforced after suffering heavy losses in the previous year's battles in North Africa. The regiment was based at Cowley Camp at Mena, near Cairo, where it undertook training until July 1943 prior to Operation HUSKY, the amphibious operation to invade the island of Sicily.
This photograph is one of a series taken in Palestine, presumably while Sale was on leave prior to Operation HUSKY.
From an album containing 205 photographs compiled by Major W H J Sale, MC, 3rd/4th County of London Yeomanry (Sharpshooters).
