The 40th Pathans in Regimental Mufti, 1914 (c)
Photograph, India, 1914 (c).
The cotton pyjamas, or loose drawers, worn by the non-commissioned officers and other ranks in regimental mufti, or walking out dress, were voluminous garments measuring as much as nine inches around the waist. The 40th Pathans were raised in 1858, and in 1914 consisted of four companies of Pathans, two of Punjabi Musalamans and two of Dogras. Before the unit was reconstituted in 1900-1901 all of its sepoys were recruited from Pathan tribes, and for that reason it could not be deployed in operations on any part of the North West Frontier.
