John Leslie Jones was born 7 August 1900. He was commissioned as a 2nd lieutenant on 29 January 1921 and was attached to the 55th Coke's Rifles. Jones was promoted to lieutenant on 29 January 1921 and captain on 29 January 1927, by which time he was serving with the 13th Frontier Force Rifles.
