Medal commemorating the Coronation of Queen Victoria 1838
Silver medal, with, on the obverse, In high relief, a left facing portrait bust of Queen Victoria, her hair dressed in a classical manner, with the inscription, 'Victoria D.G. Britanniarum Regina F.D.' (Victoria, by the grace of God, Queen of the Britons, Defender of the Faith); below the truncation of the bust, the engraver's initials, 'B.P.', for Benedetto Pistrucci (repeated on the reverse). On the reverse, Queen Victoria seated, right, upon a plinth behind which is the head of a lion. She holds the orb and sceptre and is classically dressed. Three classically dressed helmeted female figures, left, proffer a crown to Victoria, withexergue, the inscription, 'Inaugurata Die Junii XXVIII MDCCCXXXVIII' (Consecrated 28 June 1838).
Queen Victoria, succeeded her uncle King William IV on the 20 June 1837, aged just 18 years old. She was crowned in Westminster Abbey in London on 28 June 1838.
