'Remember! England Expects', 1915
Block print recruiting poster, after H L Oakley, World War One, 1915.
This poster depicts a Royal Navy sailor standing next to a gun turret and uses part of Admiral Horatio Nelson's famous signal to the fleet 'England expects that every man will do his duty'. This was sent just as the Battle of Trafalgar was going to commence on 21 October 1805. After Nelson's victory British global naval supremacy went relatively unchallenged until World War One.
