Kit Inspection, Coldstream Guards, 1895 (c)
Glass negative, 1895 (c).
This image shows privates of the Coldstream Guards having their socks, boots, and other items of kit inspected by an officer. Inspections like this took place to ensure that soldiers' kits were complete, and that all the items were in good condition.
The glass negative provides a good illustration of the uniform of the Coldstream Guards in this era. The Privates are pictured wearing scarlet single breasted tunics. The buttons of the tunics, grouped in pairs, identify the regiment as the Coldstream Guards. The cuffs are round with a four buttoned slash. The collars, cuffs, and shoulder straps are piped white. The collars are also decorated with the badge of the Garter Star. The blue cloth trousers have scarlet side-stripes. The Privates are pictured wearing bearskin caps and wearing Slade Wallace equipment.
The inspecting officer is wearing a forage cap and a scarlet tunic. The blue cloth trousers have scarlet side-stripes.
One of a collection of 278 glass negatives associated with Gregory and Company, London, and F G O Stuart, 1895-1900 (c).
