Additional Images

Captain, Army Service Corps, 1895 (c)

Glass negative, W Gregory and Company, 51 Strand, London, 1895 (c).

This image comes from a collection of glass plate negatives associated with William Gregory and Company. The negatives depict the British Army, including some members of the colonial forces, 'at home' in Britain during the 1890s.

As well as being intimate portraits of soldiers from this era, the images provide detailed illustrations of uniforms worn during the high point of military tailoring.

The captain wears full dress including a home service helmet with regimental helmet plate on the front and a spike with a rounded ball on the top. His tunic is dark blue with white facings on the collar and cuffs. The gold lace band on the collar and intricate detailing on the sleeves denote his rank. He also wears white gloves.

His pouch belt is white with a black pouch on his back. The sword belt is also white, from which his sword and black sabretache hang. The dark blue pantaloons have a double white stripe down the outside seams, and are worn tucked into black riding boots with spurs attached. His horse has standard leather military and brass tack and a black lambskin saddlecloth with a scalloped edge detail.

One of a collection of 280 glass negatives, associated with Gregory and Company, London, and F G O Stuart, 1892 (c)-1900.
