Staff Corporal Farrier, 2nd Life Guards, 1895 (c)
Glass negative, W Gregory and Company, 51 Strand, London, 1895 (c).
This image comes from a collection of glass plate negatives associated with William Gregory and Company. The negatives depict the British Army, including some members of the colonial forces, 'at home' in Britain during the 1890s.
The staff corporal farrier is wearing dismounted parade order dress. He has the pillbox forage cap which is blue with scarlet and gold bands and a small crown which shows that he is a senior non-commissioned officer.
The tunic is scarlet with dark blue facings and gold lace on the collar. He has plaited gold shoulder cords and an aiguillette on the left shoulder which loops down and has gold 'needles' hanging from it. The horseshoe and crown on his right sleeve denote his rank.
He wears blue overalls with a double scarlet stripe down the outside seam, worn over black wellington boots. White gloves are worn, and a white pouch belt with a blue flask cord along the centre. Attached is a polished black leather pouch, with gilt fittings and backed with Morocco leather. His sword is attached to the slings of his white leather sword belt.
One of a collection of 278 glass negatives, associated with W Gregory and Company, London, and F G O Stuart, 1895 (c)-1900.
