The subject of this photograph is Sergeant Major Christopher Carnaghan, 'D' Battery Royal Horse Artillery. He had served for 21 years when this image was taken, with 15 as a non-commissioned officer. He enlisted at Woolwich at the age of 15 and was awarded medals for the Egyptian campaign, including action at the battle of Tel-el-Kebir. He wears full dress uniform and is stood next to 12 pounder (6 cwt) breech-loading (BL) gun.
