Private, 2nd Dragoons (Royal Scots Greys), 1895 (c)
Photographic print by W Gregory and Company, 51 The Strand, London, 1895 (c).
Equestrian portrait of a private of the 2nd Dragoons (Royal Scots Greys) wearing bearskin, mounted on a grey horse. His lower left sleeve has badges which denote he was a qualified marksman and signaller.
Known as the 'Scots Grey Dragoons' because of their grey dappled mounts, the nickname was only officially incorporated into their title in 1877 when the regiment became the 2nd Dragoons (Royal Scots Greys). In 1921 the regiment became the Royal Scots Greys (2nd Dragoons). The regiment's most famous action was its charge at Waterloo in 1815, the unit's only only Napoleonic battle honour.
One of 52 photographs taken by W Gregory and Company, British Army, 1895 (c).
