Diary for 1916 by Lieutenant-Colonel Francis Maxwell VC, DSO
Maxwell's diary covers a period in which he commanded 12th (Service) Battalion The Duke of Cambridge's Own (Middlesex Regiment) on the Western Front, including the Battle of the Somme where he led this formation with great distinction at Trones Wood and Thiepval. For his exploits on the Somme, Maxwell was awarded a bar to his Distinguished Service Order (DSO).
