Non-commissioned officers and men of the Gold Coast Regiment stop for a meal at a makeshift table, 1901 (c)

Photograph, West Africa, 1901 (c).

Men from the Gold Coast (now Ghana) could not serves as officers in the regiment, so the NCOs were the most senior Africans in the unit. In 1901 the regiment became part of the West African Frontier Force.
