A mule team passes French soldiers, Macedonia, 1916

Lantern slide, World War One, Salonika (1914-1918), 1916.

The mountainous terrain of Macedonia was ideal for the deployment of mules and horses. The Allied Army used thousands of these animals to move its supplies, equipment and the wounded.

From a box of 111 slides associated with the Balkans, 1914-1918.
