'Armoured car attacking uhlans', Belgium, 1914 (c)

Lantern slide manufactured by Newton and Company, 3 Fleet Street, London, 1914 (c).

Reproduction of an illustration by F Gordon Crosby from 'The Graphic', after a sketch by Atherton Fleming of the 'Daily Chronicle'.

A Belgian Minerva armoured car engaging German lancers. 'The Chronicle' caption related to this image is headlined, 'A New Weapon in Warfare: One of the Belgian Armoured Motor-Cars Surprising A Party of Uhlans'; the caption refers to Mr Fleming of the 'Daily Chronicle', accompanying a Belgian car, and witnessing a high speed engagement with German Uhlans.

Prior to the German occupation of Belgium in 1914, the Belgians produced around 30 armoured cars based on the Minerva motor car, built in Antwerp. Thinly armoured and open-topped the vehicles were used for patrolling and reconnaissance.

From a box of 70 lantern slides associated with the German invasion of Belgium, 1914.
