Although Belgium's small army resisted bravely against the invasion of 4 August 1914 it was soon overrun by the huge German force opposing it. As the Germans advanced the retreating Belgian troops were joined by thousands of civilian refugees who fled their homes. Here Belgian cavalry troopers, pass a dog-pulled cart full of children.
