'Hussars on the look out', 1914
Lantern slide, World War One, Western Front (1914-1918), 1914.
By 1914 cavalry duties consisted largely of reconnaissance and protection. Hussars, lancers and other mounted units were used to form a screen ahead of the advancing infantry and artillery. They made first contact with the enemy, then discovered and reported his dispositions and movements.
