American soldiers from the 11th Engineer Regiment (Railways), 30 November 1917
Lantern slide, World War One, Western Front (1914-1918), 1917.
The soldiers of the 11th Regiment were caught up in the German counter-attack that followed the Battle of Cambrai (1917). They had been engaged in rail repairs near Gouzeaucourt, but joined elements of the British 29th Division in stabilising the line further back from that village. Several of their number were decorated for gallantry in what was the first engagement fought by American troops on the Western Front.
From a box of 73 lantern slides.
