A German prisoner is escorted in by Grenadier Guardsmen near Ginchy, 25 September 1916
Lantern slide, World War One, Western Front (1914-1918), 1916.
The German soldier was captured during the opening stages of the Battle of Morval (25-28 September 1916) on the Somme. This operation saw the British Fourth Army assault the fortified villages of Morval, Gueudecourt and Lesboeufs while the French Sixth Army attacked Combles. Although these objectives were taken and heavy casualties were inflicted on the defenders, the Allied advance was eventually contained.
From a box of 72 lantern slides.
