Soldiers from 2nd Battalion The Auckland Regiment of 2nd New Zealand Brigade wait in a trench near Flers on the Somme. During the Battle of Flers-Courcelette (15-22 September 1916) the New Zealand Division successfully captured a position known as the Switch Line between High Wood and Flers. This was the formation's first major engagement on the Western Front.
