Mortar bombs in a reserve trench ready for use, September 1916
Lantern slide, World War One, Western Front (1914-1918), 1916.
The trench was located at St. George's Hill near Fricourt on the Somme. Bombs like these would be fired from mortars at a steep angle so that they fell straight down on the enemy. Such weapons were ideally suited for trench warfare, especially where the lines of the combatants were very close together.
From a box of 50 lantern slides.
