Horse-drawn water cart stuck in the mud, St. Eloi, 11 August 1917
Lantern slide, World War One, Western Front (1914-1918), 1917.
This photograph was taken during the Battle of Passchendaele (or Third Battle of Ypres). British soldiers try to rescue a water cart and its accompanying horse that have become stuck in mud after coming off the edge of a brushwood track. Shelling and heavy rain reduced much of the ground in the Ypres salient to a quagmire and made transporting supplies very difficult.
From a box of 80 lantern slides.
