Gas alarm at Beaumont Hamel, December 1916
Lantern slide, World War One, Western Front (1914-1918), 1916.
Gongs and bells were positioned along the front line so that sentries could raise the alarm in the event of a gas attack. Hand-held rattles, horns and whistles were also adopted as means of warning troops.
