Reims Cathedral, interior after bombardment in 1914
Lantern slide, World War One, Western Front (1914-1918), 1914.
The 13th century cathedral was badly damaged by German shellfire during September 1914. Images of the building were used by Allied propagandists to demonstrate the supposed cultural barbarism of the Germans. Restoration work began in 1919 and the cathedral was fully reopened in 1938.
From a box of 80 lantern slides.
