HMS 'Birmingham', 1914

Launched in 1913, the light cruiser HMS 'Birmingham' was the first warship to sink a German U-boat. On 9 August 1914 she rammed U-15 off Fair Isle, cutting her in half. The submarine went down with all hands. On 28 August the 'Birmingham' then took part in the Battle of Heligoland, the first major naval battle of the war.
